Why should resolutions be made only during new year’s eve?
I believe a resolution that brings about a positive shift in the character can be made anytime. So without waiting for another ‘new year’ for character transformation let us make some honest resolutions for a better life right now…
…so that we can make this year a memorable and positive one not only for our own self but also for the people around us.
Usually I write about the things we should do or implement in our lives in order to make it better.
But this week,
I thought to change the tone a bit.
This article is somewhat different from the regular ones in that, I have discussed the things we SHOULD NOT do in order to have peace in our daily lives.
So let us take a pledge NOT TO get indulged in any of the following negative activities mentioned below.
Keep reminding yourself of these 6 simple resolutions throughout the year and I can assure you that at the end of this year you will be glad that you took these resolutions.
1. I will NEVER make fun of…
In our daily life we meet a number of people who are engulfed in different sorts of problems and sufferings.
A lot of people find it cool to make fun of these situations little realizing how a small funny remark leaves a scar in someone’s fragile heart.
The things which may seem very light and casual to us can be painful for someone else.
Let us suppose a colleague of yours shares his break up story with you in the hope of getting some positive energy from your side.
Now if you start mocking and teasing him in front of the whole office it will create a great psychological turbulence in his mind. And will break his self confidence and even worse he will never come back to you for support.
Never make fun of people’s troubles. Today you are laughing at their situation; who knows tomorrow you may be at the receiving end.
2. I will NOT play with emotions
People now-a-days find it more interesting to play with emotions rather than playing with video games and toys.
This is an alarming negative human trait which is on the rise since a decade or so. We now-a-days care less, feel less, and hurt more. Be it a marriage, a relationship, a friendship or any other commitment, we hardly think twice before breaking things up.
Playing with someone’s emotion is the worst thing you can do to them. Flirting, cheating on a relationship, faking love and insulting someone’s true feeling can never be justified from any point of view.
A little ‘fun’ of yours can break someone’s heart in a way that may take months and years or sometimes a whole life to heal. What most of us do not realize is that while these things have direct impact on the opposite person, it also affects us indirectly through the laws of Karma.
In simple words, the hurt you gave someone today will come back and hit you in some other form with the same intensity.
So avoid these unnecessary activities and lead a clean and sin free life.
3. I will NOT harm my body
Your body should be the first priority in life. No matter how rich you are, how many friends you have or how many degrees you hold, nothing can give you peace if you do not have a healthy body.
Today if you cannot manage to find time for your body’s maintenance, tomorrow you will be forced to take out time for your doctor’s appointment.
And as far as I believe, spending half an hour a day with your yoga trainer is any day better than visiting your doctor who will greet you with painful injections and high power tablets. The choice is yours though!
4. I will NEVER compromise with my principles
Every human being should live with some principles. There are times in our lives when situations demand us to compromise with our principles and values.
Often during the course of our lives we tend to sacrifice our principles either in lieu of some lucrative benefits or as a result of the pressure from people around us.
I agree it is very tough to live with a strict set of principles in this modern world. But the end result of maintaining this is a pleasant one.
Any relationship which does not respect your dignity, self respect and values is not worth keeping. Here are some common instances in our daily lives where our dignity, moral values and self respect are challenged:
i) You get abused, tortured and insulted by your lover in spite of being a loving, faithful partner.
ii) Your boss scolds and harasses you every day and most of the time without any strong reason.
iii) You believe in honest living while your best friend influences you to make some ‘quick’ money by unfair means.
iv) You are an anti-corruption crusader but you are forced to change your ideals due to the corrupt system around you.
Throughout your lifetime there you will continuously meet different people and situations which will try to mold you in different shapes which are completely alien to your principles.
This is when you need to take a bold step; a step that will decide the future outcome of your life.
5. I will NOT neglect my family
This is a very important resolution which most of us forget to take. With changing times our priority has changed and monetary possessions and artificial pursuits have taken over family values.
Being professional does not mean running after your career leaving your closed ones behind. A perfect life is one where you learn how to maintain a balance between your profession and family members.
There are people who are great family persons in spite of being busy and professional; may be because they understand that life is not ‘only’ about clients or the boss but also about the family members who will be there during the ups and downs.
No matter how materialistic we become, at the end of the day we still need our closest people to share our success stories and failure traumas.
So this year promise yourself that you will take equal care of your power point presentations as well as your child’s picnic plans at the same time with the same energy.
6. I will NEVER miss the chance to help the needy
This year make it your hobby to help people who are less fortunate than you. Trust me this activity gives more peace than anything else can!
We often shy away from helping others thinking that a little help from us can make no difference to the society. But we are wrong. You need not be a Bill gates to do charity! There are a number of ways how you can help people.

You can donate your books to a poor kid who wants to study, offer free education to the poor kids in your locality, give some warm clothes to a beggar who is dying of cold, open a food bank in your area and so on.
And lastly if you think the above things are not your cup of tea, there is one more wonderful thing you can do; and that is motivation. Yes you can motivate others who you think can do the above tasks.
